12-Step Program for Bibliophilia :)

Okie dokie, artichokies :) Here's the deal: -because I have all sorts of free time on my hands *insert your best version of hysterical laughter or scoff here* -because I have a $20/day reading habit -because I'm curious What great and/or terrible books are you currently reading that I should be reading (or shouldn't, for that matter)? I'm looking for a few good books...

Fleshmarket (no, it's not about what you think)

Genre: Historical Fiction

A young adult book set in 19th Century Scotland, Fleshmarket involves an operation gone wrong, mischance, theft, murder, and lots and lots of porridge.

Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging

Yet another Young Adult Novel (can you tell I'm taking a class ;)), this is the fictional journal of Georgia, a teen from across the pond. Some of the English expressions might seem funny to us, but it is HILARIOUS-sort of a Bridget Jones for adolescents.

Their Eyes Were Watching God
Zora Neale Hurston

Classic/Realistic

Blech! Janie finally falls in love (after several bad relationships), and then there's a flood. I won't spoil it (unless you ask) because someone may actually WANT to read it. This is one of those reasons why, while I support multicultural lit, books should not be chosen for classroom study unless they are actually worthwhile.

One Hundred Years of Solitude
Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Magical Realism

Okay, please don't send me nasty notes; I'm sure many people like this particularly pivotal work of fiction. Really, though-every male in the novel is either named Aurelliano or Jose Arcadio. At one point, there are, and I'm not joking, no less than 18 Aurellianos running around the story. Don't even get me started on the ending. All I can say is "Oink".
